My friends page

So all this week when I click on my friends page, I see no entries. It says at the top there are zero entries. I see entries when I go to my posts, and when I go to other peoples' pages and click the friends link, it works. When other people click on my friends page, what do you see?

Gremlins

Since I got back from California, a ton of things have broken on me all at once. I think I must have brought gremlins back with me.

My laptop wouldn't connect to my wireless network. It worked fine at all the hotels I stayed at. I ended up buying a new router and finally figured out I'd changed some of my settings when we were working in Arizona and had to change them back. Walmart let me return the router, but it still took several hours to figure out what was wrong.

Since I got back, my furnace has been acting up. At first, the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. The landlady had someone come out and look at it, and he thought it was fixed. The pilot went out again Monday night, so she's supposed to be getting somebody to look at it. Until then, I have some space heaters.

My cell phone hasn't worked since I got back. It turns on, but it can't connect to the cell network. I noticed it in California but assumed it was something with the network out there since it worked intermittently. So I'm probably going to have to buy a new cell phone.

My microwave stopped working. If I start it, the numbers still count down, but there's no light inside, no turning tray, no heat. So I'll probably have to get a new one.

What's the universe trying to tell me?
Election

I can't say that I'm really surprised at how the election turned out. I was a little disgusted by some of the speeches I saw last night, mainly Reid and Pelosi. They were going on about how this wasn't a mandate for one party's ideas but that people want things to be handled in Washington. The problem with that is since one party now controls both branches of government, they aren't going to do what's best for the country. They're going to do what's best for their party. Here's to hoping Republicans get that 41st seat in the senate.

I've watched both seasons that are out on DVD and think they do an excellent job of handling suspense in the show. I was perusing Kotaku this morning and found a post about a new Dexter video game. There aren't many details, but it sounds kind of cool. It's being made for iPhone and iPod Touch, so I will probably get it when it comes out. Sorry t3h_awesome, but maybe they'll make a DS version of it later.

Rant about WoW

This is a rant about PvP in World of Warcraft, so if you don't play WoW, it'll probably be pretty boring.

Since they released Season 2 gear to be bought with honor points, I've been playing some PvP to get the set for my shaman. It was fine while I was playing AV since Alliance is actually decent at that map, and I was getting lots of honor and tokens. I was able to buy the helm no problem.

I decided to get the shoulders next since they were my worst piece of equipment, so I started playing AB to get the tokens. Alliance is terrible at AB! They grab a node and then run off leaving it completely undefended. So I stay to defend them by myself and a rogue or warrior shows up and kills me before I can even get a spell off. We lose the node, and people start yelling about how nobody was defending.

The worst are the people who stop to look at your armor and then tell you that you suck because your gear is terrible. My gear is terrible because I can never win a match so it takes me seven hours to get enough tokens to buy the gear. Then the guy who called me a loser runs off and fights in the middle of the road away from all the flags. I get ganked and the same guy calls me an idiot for letting them assault the base.

I finally got all the tokens I needed for my shoulders because somehow we actually won a game. That made two games out of eighteen we actually won. I go and get the shoulders and realize I need even more tokens from AB to get the chest armor piece. If the set bonus for the shaman gear weren't so good, I would have given up after only two matches in AB. If I'm pissy for the next week or so, it's because I'm still playing in AB. (>_<)
My laptop

I've been griping recently about a problem with my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 600m that I bought two and a half years ago. I bought the 600m specifically because I could get a real video card instead of shared video memory. Last summer I was having problems with it overheating when I played games, so I just played games on my desktop. Over the winter I didn't notice the problem because I usually kept my house fairly cool.

So in the last two weeks, it's been getting warm again, and the overheating issue has come back. I searched on Google, and it turns out that a lot of people have the same problem with the 600m. I found out that Dell changed something in the BIOS after version 6 that causes the video cards to overheat. My BIOS was version 17. So I tried downgrading the BIOS, and now it doesn't overheat when I play games.

The problem is that version 6 doesn't support my processor. I get a little warning every time that I boot up now, so I think it's purposely running at a lower speed, which is a pain. So I have to choose whether I want to be able use it to play games and have all programs run slower or not play games. To top it off, apparently a lot of people have complained about the problem, but Dell won't fix it. It took me all of five minutes to find out the problem was with the BIOS, so you'd figure Dell could do something about it.

Despite the fact that I've had generally good luck with computers I've bought from Dell, I doubt I'll buy another laptop from them.

New web comic

I found a new web comic that I enjoy. It's got a very sarcastic tone. Some of them reminded me of certain people I know.

rogue24 and flexei
Since they like movies so much

rogue24
Especially the bottom left panel

t3h_awesome
Pretty self explanatory

peperoxors
This makes me think of you, Red

Just about everyone we meet at cons
The punchline: It's about how to tell a story

My brutally honest personality?

Crackpot - INTJ

People hate you.

Paris Hilton hates Nicole Richie. Lex Luther hates Superman. Garfield hates Mondays.
But none these even rates against the insurmountable hate, people have for you.

I mean, you're pretty damn clever and you know it. You love to flaunt your potential. Heard the word "arrogant" lately? How about "jerk?" Or perhaps they only say that behind your back.

That's right. I know I can say this cause you're not going to cry. You're not exactly the most emotional person. You'd rather spend time with your theoretical questions and abstract theories than with other people.

Ever been kissed? Ever even been on a date? Trust me, your inflated ego is a complete turnoff with the opposite sex and I am telling you, you're not that great with relationships as it is. You're never going to be a dude or chick magnet, purely because you're more concerned with yourself than others. Meh. They all hate you already anyway.

How about this- "stubborn?" Hrm? Heard that lately? All those facts which don't fit your theories must just be wrong, right? I mean, really, the vast amounts of time you spend with your head in the clouds...you're just plain strange.

*****************

If you want to learn more about your personality type in a slightly less negative way, check out this.

*****************

The other personality types are as follows...

Loner - Introverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving
Pushover - Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging
Criminal - Introverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving
Borefest - Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging
Almost Perfect - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving
Freak - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging
Loser - Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving
Clown - Extraverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving
Sap - Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging
Commander - Extraverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving
Do Gooder - Extraverted Sensing Thinking Judging
Scumbag - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving
Busybody - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging
Prick - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving
Dictator - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging

Computer

I got all the parts for my new computer on Friday, so I spent the evening putting everything together. It was much more involved this time than I remember it being when I built my first computer. First of all the case was much more complicated. My old case allowed you to pull a tray out of the case and mount the motherboard outside of the case and then slide it back in. This doesn't sound like much, but it was really a pain having to reach around power cords and brackets inside this new case. There was also an assembly inside that routes air from outside the case so that it flows directly over the processor and keeps it cool. I had to take that assembly out and getting it back in with all the hardware inside was nearly impossible.

With most of the connections you have to setup inside the case, there is one big plug that because of its shape will only connect in one specific way. The only problem I have is with the little connectors from the front of the case for the power switch, reset switch, and LEDs. I never get them right the first time because they're all out loose, and it's not very clear which end goes up or down. After about fifteen minutes of Googling, I found some pictures of how someone else installed theirs, and I got it up and running.

I was a little skeptical of the new dual-core processors since they had a slower processing speed than the Pentium 4. All I have to say about it is that the Core 2 Duo processor is amazing. I got a Duo 2.13 gHz, and it just blew away my old P4 2.4 gHz. I had bought the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and on my old computer, it ran sort of slow. It was playable, but the slowdowns were really annoying. On this new computer, there were no slowdowns at all, and the graphics look amazing.

One of my favorite things about the new setup is the case. It was specifically designed to be quiet, and I bought a fanless video card that was made to be quiet. The thing is so quiet, I can barely tell it's on. One thing I really hate about my laptop is how noisy it is since the fans, hard drive, and DVD drive are all right there in front of you. It can sound like an airplane taking off when all three are running at the same time.

Overall I'm happy with my new setup. Now I just need to buy a desk and set it up in the spare room so that I can have room in my kitchen again.

New computer

Before I went to Japan, I gave my old desktop computer to my parents to replace the one they'd been using. Their old one was a 450 mHz that they'd bought when I first went to college, so my old computer was a big upgrade. Dad offered to give it back to me when I came back from Japan earlier than expected, but I was thinking about getting a new computer anyway. I have a laptop, but it's just not good for playing games on because it gets so hot, and I think the video card overheats.

So I was looking around online and checking prices. We have a company deal through Dell, so I started looking at what they had to offer. You can get a decent machine for about a thousand dollars, so I set that as my baseline. The problem with Dell was that although they have a lot of options, I just couldn't seem to build what I really wanted. I couldn't seem to find a system that had the processor I wanted along with a decent video card without going well above my thousand dollar limit.

When I built my last computer, I learned a lot from a hardware website called www.sharkyextreme.com. I checked on there to see what I could learn about new processors and video cards and got extremely lucky in that they wrote an article last month on how to build a value PC with a price limit of one thousand dollars. So I set up my computer almost exactly like the one they built in the article. I opted for a faster processor and better mouse, so I went a little over my budget, but overall I'm very happy with the setup I got. I ordered the parts today, so hopefully they'll arrive this weekend.

Office mates

Since I started work, they put me in a new office upstairs. It's one big office that's been partitioned into four little desk spaces with cube walls in between. One of the guys in the office is usually out at meetings for most of the day. He likes to leave his cell phone on his desk when he's in meetings, and apparently there's somebody that really wants to get a hold of him. For about four hours today and three hours yesterday, his phone has been ringing every five minutes. Doesn't the person who's trying to call him get the hint? He's got it set to silent mode, but I can hear the stupid thing vibrating on his desk every time the person calls. And sometimes when he doesn't pick up his cell phone, they try calling his office phone. It's so annoying!

Date

Well my first date since I got back is over. Although it wasn't bad, we didn't really make a connection. I didn't really figure I'd be so lucky as to hit it off perfectly with the first girl I dated. Since Melissa wanted some details, she was a Japanese girl I'd met through the Intensive English Program when I was tutoring. She seemed interesting, but I don't think we had much in common. We were both talking about how hard it is to find native speakers to practice speaking another language, and we made plans to get together for conversation practice. So although there's no potential for further dating, I at least found a conversation partner to practice Japanese with.

Back in the saddle?

I haven't really been interested in dating since I broke up with Miyuki and came back from Japan. I figured I needed some time to get settled and figure out what I want. I met a girl last week, and we went for coffee last weekend. Things went pretty well then, so I asked her if she wanted to go shopping with me afterwards and she did. That went well too, so we made plans to meet again tonight. This is my first real date in quite a while, so I'm kind of nervous but also excited. I hope things go well tonight.
